Suriya made his acting debut in 1997 with “Nerrukku Ner,” directed by Vasanth. Despite facing early struggles and several rejections, he persevered and achieved his breakthrough with Bala’s critically acclaimed “Nandha” in 2001, earning a Tamil Nadu State Film Award. His role as a dedicated police officer in Gautham Menon’s “Kaakha Kaakha” (2003) established him as a leading actor in Tamil cinema.
In 2005, he starred in “Ghajini,” portraying a man with short-term memory loss, a role that brought him immense commercial success and was later remade in Hindi with Aamir Khan. His dual roles in “Vaaranam Aayiram” (2008) earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor.
The “Singam” series (2010, 2013, 2017), where he played the fiercely dedicated police officer Duraisingam, became immensely popular. In 2020, Suriya’s portrayal of Air Deccan founder G. R. Gopinath in “Soorarai Pottru” received widespread acclaim and was shortlisted for the Oscars.
More recently, his role as a lawyer fighting for marginalized communities in “Jai Bhim” (2021) garnered critical acclaim for its social message. His upcoming project, “Kanguva” (2024), is highly anticipated.
